As the month of August began, eleven youth from Camden City were at the concluding stages of their time spent at Rowan University. Selected by the City of Camden, this group of students participated in the STEAM Academy – a three-week residential program for students entering grades 10 through 12.
Students benefitted from a diverse curriculum that featured a unique pairing of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) with art, design, culture, and humanities. Receiving instruction from top faculty members, the students left the program having earned three college credits in the process. In addition to participating in classes geared towards college and career paths in the STEAM fields, the youth were able to enjoy a traditional college experience of which included staying in supervised on-campus housing, enjoying meals at Rowan’s main dining hall, utilizing campus facilities such as the Recreation Center and Student Center, and even taking STEAM-focused field trips that allowed them to explore places such as the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
While participating in the program, students actively planned for their future through immersive leadership training, career counseling, resume workshops, and PSAT prep. At the close of the three weeks, the students were heading back to Camden full of confidence, having gained valuable insight and tools that will enable them to be better prepared for their final years of high school and their overall educational endeavors. Good luck to them and all students throughout Camden as the new school year quickly approaches!
